The Bear Nobody Wanted
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (February, 1993)
Authors: Janet Ahlberg and Allan Ahlberg
Average review score:

Utterly charming
Many people don't know it, but a stuffed animal's personality is formed when he or she is made in the factory. And when a teddy bear is sewn with slightly crooked eyes and a tight mouth, it can make that bear a bit of a snob. So how can that bear stand the indignity when he's taken home by Mrs. Broom, treated as a doll by her youngest daughter, threatened by George the pyromaniac, and carted away by the rag and bone man? And that's just the beginning of our teddy's adventures! A very clever book, full of warmth, with and wordplay, and one that adults will enjoy right along with their children. An excellent book!

The Bear Nobody Wanted
This is my favorite book of all time. It's sad but sweet. A teddy bear is made in a factory with a proud looking face, and is very vain. No one seems to want him, and he goes through many and many owners, all which treat him with no love or care. Over the years, he gets very worn and old looking, and as all of his experiences have taught him, he becomes not so selfidh anymore and thinks about others. In the end he finally finds his place, which makes it a happy ending.

EXCELLENT BOOK
THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ. IT HAS AN IMAGINATIVE STORYLINE BUT A REALISTIC GROUNDING. THE READER ITSELF TAKES THE ROCKY JOURNEY WITH THIS TEDDY BEAR INTO ADVENTURE AND FEELS EACH EMOTION WITH THE CHARACTER. NOT ONLY WILL THIS BOOK LEAVE THE READER REFRESHED BUT IT WILL MAKE A SOFT SPOT IN EACH OF YOUR HEART'S FOR ALL THAT IS AROUND YOU. IF NOT MY WORD TAKE THE WORD OF THE OTHER REVIEWERS FOR THIS BOOK MOST DEFINITLY BELONGS IN THE BEST OF THE BEST SELECTION OF OUR TIME!

The Beatles: The Ultimate Recording Guide
Published in Hardcover by Checkmark Books (September, 1992)
Author: Allen J. Wiener
Average review score:

Just The Facts, Man
A fabulous Beatles "timeline diary" of their professional activities. It reads alot better than that description though. Helps one to focus on the myriad of events that the Beatles experienced and endured. You will read it and wonder how they had the energy to do what they did. An exhausting lifestyle. A great starting point to understand the internal Beatles experience. Presented in "day by day" diary format.

Not novelized. Not embellished. Just facts. A working documentary rather than a sensational expose'. Extremely useful to the serious collector.

Harrowing.

This book is a must for any Beatle fanatic
This book is the most comprehensive Beatle book I've ever read, and it helped a ton in completion of my Beatle web page. There just isn't a better book on the market.

a must have for any beatlemaniac
weiner divides his book into easy to decipher and read chronologies and for this he deserves a medal. though all of the information he gathers is available elsewhere having it in one volume is particularly useful . his concise chapter on various versions and mixes of the songs is a godsend.

Bicycling For Dummies®
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (April, 1999)
Authors: Allen St. John and Allen St John
Average review score:

Entertaining AND educational!
This book is a very good tool for those who are thinking of buying a bike, either for pleasure or for serious exercise. It covers everything from how to find a bike that fits you, to what accessories you really need, to how to plan an exercise program once you get the bike, to how to repair it yourself. And not only is it a good resource, but it's also a pleasure to read! Allen St. John is a funny writer who really enjoys his subject, making the book easy to read and very entertaining- it makes you want to go out and buy a bike the very second you start reading it!

A GREAT PLACE TO GET STARTED
This book has to be the best general guide for cycling. It takes you through all the steps of how to buy the bike that suits you, what accessories to get and what not to waste money on. It also explains how to setup your bike properly before you take your first ride. All in an easy to understand everyday English. I would recommend only to beginners, but veterans may find some useful information as well.

best overview I've seen!
This is the best book I've seen on bicycling. From describing all the different parts and components to accessories to fitting a bike to repairing and fixing basic problems, this book does it all. Covers many aspects of bicycling. Highly, highly recommended! If you are buying your first book on bicycling or if your just want to know more, this is the book for you!

The Body and Its Dangers and Other Stories
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (July, 1990)
Authors: Allen Barnett and Alan Barnett
Average review score:

The best book I read last year
I was very impressed with the quality of writing in this book, and the extraordinary compassion of the author that is evident even in the less likeable characters. The metaphors in the book are richly woven into the stories, especially the two dealing with the friends from the Jesuit college whose lives are profoundly affected by their relationships. I hope this book gets a wider reading public than gay men as several themes explored in the book- illness, breast cancer, finding the father figure, sexuality and sensuality, loss of traditional spirituality- are issues facing many men and women in society. I was distressed to learn that Mr Barnett himself had died of AIDS shortly after the book was published. He was a very gifted writer of perception and depth, and I mourn this loss to the literary world.

Sensitive and Powerful!
A most sensitive and yet powerful collection of short stories with 'The Body...' being the best of the lot. With this expressive power how come we didn't hear more from (and on) this VERY talented writer ???

The best work of American fiction from the AIDS pandemic
Put simply, Barnett's "The Body and Its Dangers" is the best work of American fiction to come out of the AIDS pandemic--its beautiful prose, its rich and fierce vision. The long story "The 'Times' As It Knows Us" alludes to and is finally equal to Joyce's "The Dead": it's a story as large as the complexities and sorrows it describes.

C Companion
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (16 December, 1997)
Author: Allen I. Holub
Average review score:

wonderful work
I had been introduced to C before I knew assembly and was left wondering the magic behind the curtains.. what happens when u call a function.. when u declare an array.. I mean I knew that it must mean something in assembly but the link was not there in any of the C books I looked up.

For an engineer who knows hardware and is curious, there is no other place than this book. Holub breaks up C into assembly and show you what happens as you compile and run it, side by side. He takes the mystery out of C programming. Wonderful for folks who missed the link between assembly and C. C has been called as High level assembly language and the proof is here in this book.

Great book for a serious C programmer
Personally, I think this book is better than the K&R book. If I read this book when I was just learning C, then I would give up and say to myself "It's too complicated. Why do I have to understand all about these..." But hold on. Don't you want to know what the stack frame is and how it works during recursion and how a variable number of arguments are handled, how the automatic type-conversion is related to the portability issue? Then read this book. If not, just skip this book. The only short coming of this book is that it's not ANSI C compliant. But it matters little if you already know about ANSI C. You will be able to discern the difference yourself, and probably can smell the history of the evolution of C. It's sort of a bonus. Allen I. Holub, what about writing the 2nd edition of this book? Then, that would be a great a help even to many embedded C programmers, I think. Sencon-to-none C book for me.

Great book
Of all the C books I had, I would rate this book my number 1. Just the section on pointers is worth the price of the book. The way it explains pointers, pointers to pointers, etc is so done so elegantly and clearly. No complex double talk or technical quibbs.

I wonder why Mr. Holub stop authoring anymore books... Mr Holub, if you are reading, please continue your excellent work ...

The Children's Health Food Book
Published in Hardcover by Life Line Inc (November, 1996)
Authors: Ron Seaborn, Alex Morris, and Everette Allen
Average review score:

First true book about food for kids
This book is awesome for children and adults. I gave this book to a child once and he took it to school. Kids were lining up just to see the book. No more Standard American Diet Pyramid brainwashing. This book is one of a kind. And it will be hard to find soon. Pictures are amazing. Text is easy and true to the core. It will make you change your food habits. Even if it's just for a day or 2. Vegan or meat eater you will LOVE it. America is waking up to health. ...
And just an update: the kid I gave the book to - changed his diet and now is working on his family members.

Why Popeye eats spinach and Wimpy eats hamburgers
This educational book utilizes a comic-book format to explain which food is nourishing and healthful. And which is worthless and damaging. Glass Man, whose transparent body allows us to see when he has eaten the right or wrong foods, takes us on the nutritional journey. Along the way we will meet the deadly Mucus Gang, whose members are on the Most Wanted List for making people weak and sick. These are the repulsive Meat Monster, Sugar Demon, Dairy Goon, Starch Creature, and their grotesque leader, the Mucus Destroyer. We'll see the unhealthy results from a diet of this poison: a clogged system, premature aging, failing organs, disease. Who can protect us? The Health Guardians! These are the heroes known as Fruitarian Fighter, Grain Crusader, Vegetarian Warrior, and Seafood Gladiator. Their live, wholesome foods can knock the Mucus Gang out of our bodies. This is a unique book, as informative for adults as it is for children. The colorful cartoons and humorous text contain sound principles of nutrition. Kids will get a kick out of the yucky junkfood monsters and the stalwart healthfood supermen. I wish at least one of the latter could have been portrayed as a superwoman. But that's a minor, ahem, "beef" over a highly recommended vegan book.

Great Message!
This book was given to my children as a gift after my family turned vegan. The book has a great message and presents it in a very non-threatening easy to understand way! I highly recommend anyone reading it to a little one to put them on the right path for healthy living.

Christenberry Reconstruction: The Art of William Christenberry
Published in Hardcover by Univ Pr of Mississippi (April, 1996)
Authors: Trudy Wilner Stack, William Christenberry, Allen Tullos, University of Arizona Center for Creative Photography, and University of Arizona Museum of Art
Average review score:

Splendid Introduction to Christenberry's Work
This book was published as the monograph to a traveling national exhibition on William Christenberry which was curated by the Center for Creative Photography's curator of photography, Trudy Wilner Stack, back in 1996. It is a splendid introduction to Christenberry's work. Through his photography, sculpture and painting, Christenberry has explored the South's rural manmade landscape and its tortured psychological landscape, focusing in on the Ku Klux Klan. Working in color, Christenberry comes across as a latter day Walker Evans, showing much empathy and respect for the culture he depicts in his photographs, with, of course, a notable exception for the Ku Klux Klan. Anyone interested in seeing a fine introduction to Christenberry's work should look no further.

Excellent homage to a superlative artist
As unique and genuine an artist as America has produced, Christenberry receives admirable attention in this work. The depth and breadth of his talent is showcased, with attention paid to all of the mediums he employs: painting, sculpture, and photography. Southerners will especially appreciate the evocative quality that rings through these pieces, but their appeal is not limited to art enthusiasts from that region alone. The gravity of the work has a wide appeal.

A visual treat!
A visual treat. The artist has captured the look and feel of rural Alabama. Whether it is a photograph, assemblage, painting or drawing, there is a basic truth and honesty to these works. They evoke the time from the depression to the present in a haunting and beautiful way. Mr, Christenberry is indeed a poet.

Cmos Analog Circuit Design
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (1987)
Authors: Phillip E. Allen, Douglas R. Holberg, and Holberg Allen
Average review score:

Must Have
A must have book for any serious analog / mixed signal IC designer. Very detailed and hands-on approach to design tradeoffs. The book was THE Reference for an Austin-based IC company which is already making its 18th year.

...

Great Book
Especially for undestanding OP-AMP's and Comparators, this book is the best with application and solved examples. Additional to
this , explanations about CMOS structures are very usefull...

One of the best books on CMOS Design
This is one of the best books on CMOS circuit design. Not a lot of theory stuff, but a lot of practical stuff. I would highly recommend this book. For basic this book would be more than sufficient. Although it does not has any chapters on Low voltage design. This will become very important because as the geometry gets smaller, the power supply also reduces. For 0.18u the power supply is about 1.8V.

Blackberries in the Dark
Published in Library Binding by Knopf (09 July, 2002)
Authors: Mavis Jukes, Thomas B. Allen, and David Johnson
Average review score:

A realy good book fore calm reader!
The Title of this story is Blackberry's in the Dark. The authors name is Mavis Jukes, and the pictures were done by Tomas B. Allen. There's a little boy named Austin. He goes to his grandparent's house every summer. He's not so happy this time, his grandfather past away not so long ago and so this time it's just his grandmother and him. He goes to pick some blakberries by the riuer. His grandmother comes up later with some fishing gear. His grandfather was going to teach him to fly fish that year, but now the grandmother is going to try to teach him even though she doesn't know how, she was thinking maybe her and her grandson could try to figure it out together. Here's a phrase to help you see how they talk in this book. "I didn't Know" began Austin. His grandmother drew him near to her. "Nobody knew, Austin." She closed her eyes and shook her head. "Nobody knew that would be the last summer we'd all have together." She pressed Austin's cheek against her sweater and they stood there for a few minutes, roking back and forth. After a while she asked..." I would recommend this book to some people. I liked it because in a way it was touching but in a way it was fun. I woudn't recommend this book to someone that just really doesn't like calm books, they mostly like action books. I haven't read any other books like this one yet. It's good!

Tells of a family tradition of blackberry picking summers
Mavis Jukes' Blackberries In The Dark tells of a family tradition of blackberry picking summers challenged by a grandfather's death. Grandma is alone and Austin feels his summer has lost its special magic - it's up to them both to make new traditions in this warm story of death and change, with black and white drawings by Thomas Allen.

Poignant Tale about Loss
Probably the best young children's book on the subject of a death in the family.

Very beautifully written, tears will almost definitely flow from the adult reading it. One might then ask, why bother with this book if it's about death, a heavy subject my kid hasn't been exposed to? Well, actually, it is a very uplifting story about life itself. No psychobabble or religious references, just a simple story of family, bonds, and tradition. Jukes' writing is beautifully crafted, making this simple story very meaningful. Death itself is dealt with matter-of-factly, and there is nothing scary in the book.

Though tinged with sadness, it is truly wonderful, and there are even a couple of good laughs. (Like life itself, no?)

Highly recommended.

Building Mental Muscle : Conditioning Exercises for the Six Intelligence Zones
Published in Paperback by Allen D. Bragdon Pub. (June, 1999)
Authors: David Gamon and Allen D. Bragdon
Average review score:

Fascinating exercises for mental agility
This book - Building Mental Muscle - is chock-a-block full of puzzles, games and other conundrums which you can share with your family and friends. It provides wonderfully clever ways to giving insights into the thinking process while entertaining with a variety of challenges and tests. Mensa would be's will be intrigued!

Enlightening and Motivational
I had one main motivation for getting your book. To recapture my learning power! My second motivation was to understand why it needed to be recaptured.

Not only did I want to gain back my "Mental Muscle", but I wanted to understand why and how my learning capacity diminished in a few short years. I also wanted to understand preventative measures. And I wanted this information backed by research. So you see, your book was a perfect match.

The book is more entertaining than I anticipated! That has been the biggest surprise- it's fun. The mix of puzzles, exercises, research studies and explanations is like a song with an interesting and varied melody. It never stays in one place long enough to tire of it. Also, the information on how the brain functions (how it can become more/less powerful) was exactly what I wanted to know. Things like how the Hippocampus routes and retrieves data, how stress interferes with memory and how exercise helps the retention of mental function not only enlighten, but serve as positive motivation that the brain can be made strong again. Probably my favorite parts are those that explain the underlying logic needed to work through and solve the exercises. Like in the "Familial Dilemma" exercises.

As you can tell, I feel you have written a fine book and I am excited to see how my learning will be impacted. (bangonrecords.com -Music Production for film and television)

Wow!
What a great book. I really enjoyed reading "Building Mental Muscle." When I decided that I wanted to study whole brain thinking, I spent over $1,300 on books and yours was exaclty what I was looking for-among the very best. Congratulations!
